Leatherwork at the bench

Handmade leather · West Valley City, Utah

Cut, stitched & finished by one pair of hands.

Belts and knife sheaths built the slow way — full-grain leather, saddle stitching, and no two ever quite alike. Made by Dennis Aardema in West Valley City, Utah.

The story

Retirement just meant more time at the bench.

Dennis spent a working lifetime fixing things with his hands. When he retired, he didn't slow down — he cleared a corner of the garage, sharpened his round knife, and went back to the craft he'd loved since he was a young man: leather.

Every belt starts as a full side of vegetable-tanned hide. He cuts each strap by hand, burnishes every edge, and saddle-stitches the stress points the old way — two needles, one waxed thread, no machine shortcuts.

“If my name's stamped on it, it'll outlast me. That's the deal.”— Dennis Aardema

Full-grain only

Vegetable-tanned hides that age into a deep patina.

Saddle stitched

I use bonded nylon thread on all my leather goods which is very durable and will last a lifetime.
